چکیده

Laboratory data and corrected estimates of cosmic ray dose are used to predict the thickness and survivability of the cosmic rayproduced, primordial comet mantle ("crust"). These results support the hypothesis that the refractory mantle produced by cosmic ray irradiation of a new comet may be able to survive a comet's entry into the inner solar system for many revolutions. Because this mantle may extend to several meters in depth, the proposed CRAF and Rosetta probes would have to be extended to reach unprocessed cometary material. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.

Comet 9p/tempel 1: Interpretation with the Deep Impact Results

According to our common understandings, the original surface of a shortperiod comet nucleus has been lost by sublimation processes during its close approaches to the Sun. Sublimation results in the formation of a dust mantle on the retreated surface and in chemical differentiation of ices over tens or hundreds of meters below the mantle. In the course of NASA’s Deep Impact mission, optical and ...

Revealing the Earth’s mantle from the tallest mountains using the Jinping Neutrino Experiment

The Earth's engine is driven by unknown proportions of primordial energy and heat produced in radioactive decay. Unfortunately, competing models of Earth's composition reveal an order of magnitude uncertainty in the amount of radiogenic power driving mantle dynamics. Recent measurements of the Earth's flux of geoneutrinos, electron antineutrinos from terrestrial natural radioactivity, reveal th...

The subduction factory: How it operates in the evolving Earth

JULY 2005, GSA TODAY ABSTRACT The subduction factory processes raw materials such as oceanic sediments and oceanic crust and manufactures magmas and continental crust as products. Aqueous fluids, which are extracted from oceanic raw materials via dehydration reactions during subduction, dissolve particular elements and overprint such elements onto the mantle wedge to generate chemically distinc...

Chemical differentiation of the Earth: the relationship between mantle, continental crust, and oceanic crust

The average chemical compositions of the continental crust and the oceanic crust (represented by MORB), normalized to primitive mantle values and plotted as functions of the apparent bulk partition coefficient of each element, form surprisingly simple, complementary concentration patterns. In the continental crust, the maximum concentrations are on the order of 50 to 100 times the primitive-man...

From interstellar dust to comets: the extended CO source in comet Halley

Some simplemolecules in comet comae like CO, C2, C3, CN, H2CO appear to be distributed in such a way that they are neither directly emitted from the nucleus surface nor created as daughter molecules from more complex gas phase species. The only remaining possible source is the organic component in comet dust. The requirements imposed on the comet dust grains by the distributed CO emission are t...
